PRESS RELEASE
African Youth Festival (Afryfest)
The first African Youth Festival (AFRYFEST '09) to be held on Sunday 31 May 2009, 4pm at the Mt Albert War Memorial Hall, will bring together community professionals, government officials and cultural groups to deliberate on how we can build strong ethnic communities by empowering the youth.
The Ghanaian Association of New Zealand with the support of the Lottery Grants Board has organized AFRYFEST to highlight the African culture in today’s contemporary society and provide a forum to draw attention to issues affecting the youth. “The theme for this year is Empowering tomorrow’s leaders today and this festival will create the opportunity for stakeholders to dialogue with the youth and to build confidence in the next generation of African New Zealanders” said Dr Charles Ampomah-Dwamena President of the Ghanaian Association.
Those who will be speaking at this festival include Auckland Mayor John Banks, the keynote speaker Minister of Ethnic Affairs Hon Pansy Wong, African author and life strategist Getrude Matshe, African health coordinator Rumishael Masanga and more. There will be performances by the well-acclaimed Richard Boateng & Zoh Zoh Ensemble, Ghana Akwaaba Troupe, Taste of Africa, an African Rap battle and many more.
This festival is open to the general public and admission is free. “This is an opportunity to experience the African culture as evolved with contemporary society and to address the serious issues affecting tomorrows leaders- the youth”.
