Inaugural Concert by new Wellington brass
ensemble
On Wednesday 27 May at 7pm the New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) Brass Ensemble will give its inaugural concert.
This concert, the first of the year, will take place at St. Andrews on the Terrace, and promises to become an ongoing feature of the NZSM programme of events. The concert series is sponsored ABI Music and Andrew Leech, and entry is by donation.
The concert will feature arrangements of works by well-known classical composers Handel, Bach and Shostakovich, along with lesser-known works by Jan Koetsier and Robert King.
The ensemble is made up of talented students from the NZSM performance programme, including Richard Shirley, winner of the 2008 Rotary Club of Wellington Music Prize. Andrew Jarvis, NZSO principal tuba and head of the NZSM Brass programme says “I’m pleased to have been involved in getting this NZSM ensemble off the ground. Developing a top-notch brass ensemble is a project that has always been dear to my heart, and I’m delighted with the results.”
The NZSM Brass Ensemble has been invited to perform at the prestigious Melbourne International Festival of Brass in September/October this year.
Since 2006, Victoria University and Massey University have been operating a joint New Zealand School of Music (NZSM), a centre of musical excellence. The NZSM website is www.nzsm.ac.nz.
