Football – Special
Olympics Style!
North Harbour Stadium in Albany, was the venue for the recent Special Olympics North Harbour Secondary Schools Football Ribbon Day.
Eleven teams from eight schools from within the North Harbour region participated in a very enjoyable day which consisted of both football skills and matches.
Athletes of varying abilities participated in football skills, such as, goal scoring, dribbling and control of the ball.
With plenty of support from the sideline, it was wonderful to see these special athletes enjoying participation in sport and gaining a sense of achievement.
There was great excitement both on and off the field during the afternoon matches. Singing and dancing by many of the very talented students, added to the exciting atmosphere of the day.
Thanks must go to the many supporters and volunteers, particularly the fantastic girls from Rangitoto College, who helped make the day such a success. Also to North Harbour Stadium, and United 1 Soccer for providing the venue and player of day prizes.
Leanne Gaddes who enjoys volunteering at these events said “a big thanks must go to Special Olympics NZ (North Harbour Region), for providing these special athletes with the opportunity to gain a sense of achievement and pride and for allowing them the chance to ‘shine’.
