Young & Hungry Festival of New Theatre 2009!

Young & Hungry Festival of New Theatre 2009!

OYSTER, SIT ON IT & URBAN HYMNS
10-25 July: 6.30pm, 8.00pm & 9.30pm
BATS Theatre, 1 Kent Tce

The Young & Hungry Festival of New Theatre began at BATS in 1994. Since then we have produced over 40 new New Zealand plays for the BATS stage and launched 100's of careers in the Theatre.

In 2009 Young & Hungry are fulfilling a long-held dream, for the first time ever, thanks to a new partnership with Auckland Theatre Company, all three Young and Hungry plays will be performed con-currently in Auckland and Wellington, three plays, two cities, over 100 young, hungry theatre-makers - we are not just hungry, we're ravenous!

The unique aspect of the Young & Hungry system is the mentoring programme, where industry professionals such as Glenn Ashworth (Lighting), Thomas Press (Sound), Bex Joyce (Costume), Meggan Frauenstein (Set), Lori Leigh (Stage Management) and Brianne Kerr (Publicity) provide young people with a broad range of skills and practical experience to create, participate and appreciate all aspects of theatre-making.

Join us in 2009 for our 15th Festival - it's going to be a big party!

Y&H '09 - PLAYS: Wellington Season

6.30pm OYSTER
By Vivienne Plumb (The Cape, The Wife Who Spoke Japanese in Her Sleep)
Directed by Rachel More (This is Our Youth, The Henchmen)
Cruelty-free pork and the search for divinity
Dolores Romero sings like an angel; Gaia wants to save the world and Napolean wants to travel far away from it; Velma is into cruelty-free pork, Lelani wants to beat her up and Chevy thinks he can explain everything. But what they all really want to know is who they are, and where they belong in this big wide world. We all have our epiphanies; if only they weren't so loud. OYSTER is a quirky, funny and ultimately moving story from Vivienne Plumb who is quickly establishing herself as one of New Zealand's most exciting playwrights.

8.00pm SIT ON IT
By George Titheridge
Directed by Lyndee-Jane Rutherford (Love Puke, The Courtesan)
An engaging, raging comedy about fun'n'sh*t
A comedy for chicks, dicks and anyone who has ever wondered why girls spend so much time in the bathroom, SIT ON IT is a hilarious peek into a very private world. Set entirely in the ladies toilet of a trashy nightclub and awash with witty dialogue and authentic characters - be prepared to be grossed out, affronted and laughing in the aisles!

9.30pm URBAN HYMNS
By Miria George (And What Remains)
Directed by Fiona Truelove
What the kids are up to after dark…
A lyrical examination of that delicate period where the potential of youth meets the reality of the world, URBAN HYMNS is about the time in life when our choices start to define us. Money talks in Joseph's neighbourhood and the market place rules. But when he can no longer make the cut Joseph turns to Tobias for an answer and together they make the first worst decision of their lives. Survival and greed, art and music, drugs and crime - in URBAN HYMNS everyone is searching for their own particular version of freedom.
