Objectivity at Solander: works on paper

Opening at Solander on Wednesday 9 September is an exhibition Objectivity featuring works by local artists Basia Smolnicki and Fleur Williams, and Dunedin-based artist Jenna Packer.

In this exhibition the artists exhibit a variety of new works exploring the domestic realm, environmental portraits and historically influenced studies of the world.

Wellington artist and tutor Basia Smolnicki presents an array of etched portraits cleverly created from objects found washed up on beaches, on city streets and in household refuse. Selecting graphic shapes and forms from this material, the artist has constructed a series of portraits expressing concern at the waste all around us.

Jenna Packer exhibits new monotypes and paintings featuring fantastic flying machines of the past, with Zeppelins, flying boats and balloons referencing survivors and migrants in this age of climate change In the 'Drylands' series Packer explores relationships, tenderness, wisdom, anxiety and optimism; life as 'normal', in a parched landscape inspired by Central Otago.

Local artist Fleur Williams shows new prints and jewellery featuring objects and symbols of domesticity. Inspired by busy weekends of getting things done, the velvety mezzotints and embossings celebrate nesting and being house-proud in the suburbs. Laid out in unique groupings in the prints, Williams' brightly coloured objects stand out like a visual list of things to do.
