NZers can help end Spain’s infamous blood sport – Bullfighting
The Catalonian Parliament is poised to ban bullfighting with a vote on changes to the Catalan Animal Protection Law later this year and New Zealanders can help ensure it is a vote for animal welfare.
The Prou (enough) campaign calls for a modification to Catalonian animal protection law, which currently safeguards all animals except the bulls and horses used in bullfights.
Programmes manager for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), Bridget Vercoe, said polls have repeatedly shown that bullfighting is not a tradition most Catalonians are proud of. Earlier this year, more than 180,000 Catalonian citizens united behind the Prou campaign demanding an end to the bloody cruelty of bullfighting in their region.
This overwhelming public support has forced the Catalonian Parliament to schedule a vote on removing the exemption.
Ms Vercoe said, ``New Zealanders can help influence the vote by showing the Catalonian Parliament that their citizen’s anti-cruelty campaign has worldwide backing.’’
``In Catalonia, one of the largest regions of Spain, more than 100 bulls are inhumanely slaughtered each year in the bullrings. Men on foot or horseback repeatedly stab the trapped, exhausted bulls with knives and spears. It takes about 20 minutes for the bulls to die.’’
``I urge all New Zealanders opposed to this cruel blood sport to take action today. WSPA is collecting signatures of concerned people from around the world in support of Prou on its website, www.wspa.org.nz.’’
``This ban would be a landmark victory for the entire anti-bullfighting movement around the world,’’ she said.
