Long Term Goals

Kenyan-born Roger Whittaker can now lay claim to the longest span between #1 Albums on the Official New Zealand Music Chart as Greatest Hits: The Golden Age Of Roger Whittaker ascends to the summit 34 years and 1 month since his only other #1 album here.

That set, The Very Best Of Roger Whittaker, topped the chart for 8 consecutive weeks, longer than any other album in 1975.

Although Tiki Taane’s #1 Always On My Mind falls to #38 on the Singles Top40 it racks up a 55th chart week, making it the second longest running chart single of all time and the longest ever by a local act. It moves clear of last week’s joint equal second place with Freddie Fender’s 1975 #2 Before The Next Teardrop Falls.

Another Kiwi chalking up a #1 is local entertainment icon Sir Howard Morrison who gains just his second chart-topper. This week Once In A Lifetime gives the Rotorua-born singer his first #1 DVD (although To Sir With Love, a tribute to his career, made the DVD summit). His only other #1 appearance was the five-week Singles Chart-topping How Great Thou Art in 1981.

It’s taken Beyonce three-and-a-half years to stay at #1 for longer than a single frame. Until this week 2006’s Check On It two-week streak marked the only time she had stayed in the pole position here longer than a solitary time - and that includes Destiny’s Child singles. This week Sweet Dreams maintains its Singles crown, and moves just a whisker shy of topping the RadioScope100 airplay list too. That should tip the scales and see her reign for another week and overall personal best.

The New Singles

#6 Dizzee Rascal - Holiday

Dizzee Rascal (real name Dylan Kwabena Mills) grabs another New Zealand hit just as the collaboration Bonkers with Armand Van Helden exits. Holiday drops into the Top10 at #6. Previously Madonna (#7 1984) and Green Day (#13 2005) have charted Holiday hits here.

#11 Miley Cyrus - Party In The USA

In a stroke Miley Cyrus matches her previous high water mark. Party In The USA opens at #11, equaling last year’s See You Again and gives her a fifth hit here overall.

#29 Kidz In Space - Downtime

Smashproof labelmates Ashley Hughes, Matthew Neshat and Joshua Fountain are Auckland trio Kidz In Space. Lead single Downtime from their just issued Episode 001: Chasing Hayley EP opens their chart account at #29.

#33 Boys Like Girls - Love Drunk

Boston four-piece Boys Like Girls begin their New Zealand Chart career with Love Drunk, new at #33. It’s the title track to their forthcoming sophomore album.

The New Albums

#2 7 Worlds Collide - The Sun Came Out

Nearly eight years since the original 7 Worlds Collide outing (originally billed as Neil Finn and Friends) comes The Sun Came Out, this week’s highest new Albums comer at #2. Among the guests and friends it marks the recording and chart debut of Neil’s wife Sharon and bests the 2001 original’s #5 debut and peak. The Oxfam proceeds-dedicated issue was recorded in Auckland this past summer.

#7 David Guetta - One Love

Two top ten singles have propelled French DJ/Producer David Guetta’s latest long-player One Love into the Top10 at #7 first week. It’s his first issue to chart here.

#12 Tahuna Breaks - Black, Brown And White

Together four years, Auckland band Tahuna Breaks enjoy a #12 opening with their sophomore effort Black, Brown And White. Their 2007 Reflections debut didn’t chart. The band is on the road until October 17 in support of the set. They play Tokomaru Bay on the East Coast this Saturday.

#20 David Dallas - Something Awesome

The third of the three locals dropping into the Albums Chart this week comes from Papatoetoe boy David Dallas and his solo Something Awesome. The set includes his April #34 Indulge Me with Devolo. Previously known as Con-Psy and one half of Frontline, he made #27 with 2005’s Borrowed Time which went on to win the Best Hip Hop Album gong at the 2006 NZ Music Awards.

#28 Cascada - Evacuate The Dancefloor

The German dance duo follow their #2 debut single Evacuate The Dancefloor with the album of the same name new at #28, giving the pair their first Album Chart inking here.

#31 Colbie Caillat - Breakthrough

Californian Colbie Caillat’s sophomore and US #1 set Breakthrough lands at #31 first week here. It features this week’s #31 Falling For You single. Two years back Coco peaked at #12 in a 25-week run.
