Steel Ballerina comes to the Hawkins Theatre

Steel Ballerina comes to the Hawkins Theatre

A play that explores the idea of a creative expiry date, the private versus public face of a dancer and the tenacity involved in such an inspired career will feature at Papakura’s Hawkins Theatre early next month.

Steel Ballerina focuses on the late years of Prima Ballerina Margot Fonteyn’s career.

At the age of 41 the ballet world expected Fonteyn to retire, but the dramatic appearance of Rudolf Nureyev rejuvenated her and she continued dancing for another 19 years. The partnership with the passionate, wild and dedicated Russian was to be one of the most talked about and magical relationships in the world of dance.

Actor Mel Dodge (MA in Acting ArtsEd, London, winner of Chapman Tripp Actress of the Year award), dancer Pagan Dorgan (best dance show Wellington FRINGE) and director Jacqueline Coats(MTA Directing, Toi Whakaari, winner of Chapman Tripp Award for Most Original Production) collaborate to create a beautiful and moving exploration of a woman’s journey through an extraordinary life and career.

They use contemporary dance, movement and language to explore the mystique surrounding Fonteyn.

Steel Ballerina arrives at the Hawkins Theatre fresh from a five day season at BATS during the ‘Dance your socks off” festival and a two-day tour to the Tempo Dance Festival.

This production is part of the Hawkins season of ‘TEMPO - NZ Festival of Dance’, which is on its annual calendar of events. Steel Ballerina was programmed by TEMPO Festival Director and celebrated choreographer Mary Jane O’Reilly.
