New Charity Event for Taupo: Cruising for a Cause

Taupo’s newest charity event is set to take place on Saturday 31 October 2009, fundraising for Taupo Hospice.

The event is called ‘Cruising for a Cause’ and will feature a line up of over a hundred different vehicles at the Tongariro Domain.  In return for a gold coin donation, event goers can chose to go for a ride in any vehicle.

To date, the line up of vehicles confirmed include hot rods, vintage cars, custom cars, trucking rigs and fire trucks, and organisers believe it will be the biggest automotive event ever held in Taupo.

The event is the brain child of Marty Sutherland, who became aware of the services offered by Taupo Hospice earlier this year while nursing his ailing mother.

“The team at Taupo Hospice were so supportive of my family at such a hard time,” said Mr Sutherland.  “After my mother passed away, I really wanted to do something to help raise some funds for Taupo Hospice.”

A member of the Taupo Vintage Car Club, Mr Sutherland started thinking about an event idea involved cars.

“I talked through the idea with a couple of work colleagues who are involved in the Hot Rod Club, and it’s just grown from there really,” said Mr Sutherland.

As well as the vehicles that the public can go for a ride in, there will be an array of other vehicles on display.

“The support for the event so far has been amazing,” said fellow event organiser, Gareth Green. “We’ve got loads of cars, motorcycles, trucks, boats, and hopefully a helicopter arranged, so those at the event can check out the static displays while waiting for their ride.”

“We have had plenty of vintage, classic and custom cars register to be involved in the event, and would love to hear from any truck drivers who wish to polish up their rig and take some kids for a cruise around town on the day,” said Mr Green.

“It’s going to be something of a boy’s day out I think,” joked Mr Green.  “I’m sure there’ll be plenty of dads and kids checking out the displays, and I’ve already got my own shortlist of cars that I want to go for a cruise in.”
