Strike Soundsystem Joins Manukau Festival of Arts

Media Release
28 October 2009

Strike Soundsystem will bring an electrified performance to the city as part of the Manukau Festival of Arts.

Strike brings the best of their high energy drumming and percussion music and mixes it with live DJ production and vocals. Strike is a high energy drumming group made up of New Zealand's most outstanding percussionists, specialising in movement-based, choreographed percussion.

Council Arts Manager Leisa Siteine says Strike Soundsystem brings the exhilaration of live percussionists who beat, bang and hammer a range of traditional and custom-
made instruments.

“This is definitely a show that will be action-packed and explosive. It won’t be a show that will see the audience sitting in their seats – it’s more like a dance party with a festive atmosphere.”

Strike have toured their shows internationally, with recent performances in Australia and China. Their original music, dynamic presentation and creative flexibility have wowed, entertained, surprised and impressed audiences within New Zealand and around the world.

For this show, Strike has also enlisted the talent of Wellington-based diva Lisa Tomlins, well-known for her association with Rhombus, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Shapeshifter. Also joining Strike will be MC Mana, Margot Pierard and hip hop/breaks DJ Samu (aka Sam Minns), who will collectively create an evening of big beats that will leave the audience buzzing and wanting more.

Strike musicians will be holding special workshops with a small group of Manukau secondary students during the week, with students getting a chance to perform as part of the show on Friday night. The students come from Macleans College, James Cook High School, Pakuranga College, Mangere College and Elim Christian School.
