This weekend was bright and colourful at the National Aquarium of New Zealand.

Not only did the aquarium open its new coral display for all to see, but more than 800 children brought in their vibrant coral competition forms to add additional colour to the surroundings.

A large coral outline was created in the foyer of the aquarium where children could hang their creations, but with the overwhelming response the colour expanded to the walls and even Bluey the blue tongue skink had his tank partially decorated!

To reward the fine efforts of participating children entry to the aquarium was free so they could view the new coral display. A gift of a goodie bag was also given containing some fishy and colourful treats!

National Aquarium of New Zealand manager Rob Yarrall says that the task of judging so many fantastic entries has been a very tough job. But after much debate they can come up with 11 winners in a variety of categories and ages.

The overall ‘Coraltastic’ colouring competition winner is nine-year-old Lana Armand from Napier.

“Lana demonstrated a very mature way of using colour and blended it in a way to enhance the attractiveness of her picture,” says Rob.

“All children who entered should be very proud of their designs. The fact they participated and enjoyed themselves was the key objective.”

The coral display was officially opened last Wednesday evening by councillor Tania Wright alongside the donors of the collection, Clif and Carol Carson of Invercargill. The Carsons were relieved and happy to see their beloved collection thriving in its new home at the aquarium.

From now on the new coral display will be on permanent display at the aquarium for everyone to enjoy.
