Let the Summer Festival begin

Press statement for immediate use from NZ Racing Board.

Let the Summer Festival begin

A totally unique Kiwi experience begins Boxing Day with the start of the Summer Festival race day meetings across the country.

On-course marketing and events manager at NZ Racing Board Janice Hill said there was nothing else like the series in New Zealand. “This is a totally unique New Zealand experience that captures the rural essence of who we are. The atmosphere is relaxed and charming; a great way to spend time with friends and family.”

There are 41 race meetings in the Summer Festival calendar stretching from Ruakaka in the far north to Gore in the far south.

The meetings begin Boxing Day and will run across the country in different locations ending February 13.

Many of the events will be held at race courses linked to early New Zealand, like Tauherenikau, Te Aroha and Omakau. For some, it will be the big community event of the year. “It’s a chance for the country to come out and party and celebrate.”

Janice said the Summer Festival race meetings were substantially different to the major city race days. “The emphasis is on family fun. At these meetings mum, dad and the kids can get close to the horses, mingle with the trainers and support staff and really get a sense of what a track meeting is about.

“You don’t need to necessarily be into racing to enjoy these events. The Summer Festival race days are intended to be a fun day out where the kids can take part in sack races, face painting, pony rides and three-headed t-shirt competitions (all provided free-of-charge) while mum and dad relax, and if you want to place a bet, then we have made that easy for you. “

A special $3, $4, $5 or $6 FunBet betslip has been developed where horses are randomly selected by computer with a weighting towards the favourites. “So you don’t have to be an expert to place a bet.”

Janice urged holiday makers to check www.theraces.co.nz for a race location near your holiday destination. “I am confident you and your family will have a lot of fun.”
