Grant Hart (USA Husker Du) New Zealand Tour 2010
In a perfect and just world we may have been able to witness the extreme ferocity and sublime melody of one of Americas greatest bands HUSKER DU headlining one of the numerous summer festivals, or selling out a 12000 seat theatre in less than a week. But alas this is not to be, and anyone who is aware of the details surrounding the breakup of this band would know it will very likely never be.
However, after three decades in the game, Grant Hart, drummer and co songwriter of HUSKER DU will be traversing the length of our country in support of his latest solo offering Hot Wax. Packing only a guitar and a songbook, many a songwriter would envy, Grant will open his five date tour on the 3rd February at the Kings Arms in Auckland, and finish up on the 7th February at Chicks Hotel in Dunedin.
A quick scan of the big shows this summer only goes to reaffirm the influence that Grant’s old band Husker Du has had on music, with both Green Day and Dave Grohls Foo Fighters covering many of Grants songs. And of course legend has it that when Frank Black advertised for a bass player, he declared his hand with 2 influences, that being Husker Du and Peter Paul and Mary. To that list you could throw in Nirvana, Dinosaur Jnr, Sonic Youth and The Hold Steady to name but a few.
With Grant performing songs from his Husker Du and Nova Mob days, to tracks from his latest solo albums, this will be a great opportunity to see one of the true legends of independent music perform. In true punk rock fashion, Grant still takes to the stage without fan fare, and without set list and word even has it from the American leg of his tour that he is happy to take requests, unless they are of the Bob Mould variety.
