Background
The Funky Monkeys began
writing children's music and entertaining in 2003. They have
since released two albums, one DVD, and have won the NZ APRA
award for 'Best Children's Music Video' in 2008.
Lam Sam, a trained primary school teacher and musician, along with his musical friends Joe McNamara (tertiary music educator) and Neil Tolan (community youth worker) combined their talents to bring a more 'home-grown' element to live kids entertainment. In 2008 the popularity of their shows became so great that something had to give in order to keep up with the demand.
'We all had to quit our day jobs to keep up with the bookings. It was exciting knowing we were doing something outside the box, and making people happy at the same time,' recalls Tolan.
'One of our most popular songs is about bubbles,' says McNamara. 'Kids and parents are really going to love what we've done with them in the show.'
When asked what their secret to popularity with kids is, Lam Sam says 'there are three things children universally enjoy; dancing, singing and laughing. Our shows have always been created around encouraging interaction with the crowd, letting kids be kids, and providing wholesome entertainment that the whole family can enjoy.'
The Funky Monkeys have performed to over one million people as the nation's only full-time band for children. 2009 saw them perform 265 live shows across New Zealand.
