Out of the Box for Haiti inspires others
When Nicola Gledhill of Wellington set about to raise funds for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, she probably had no idea that her ‘out of the box’ challenge would attract such wide interest.
In a little over two weeks Miss Gledhill has managed to secure more than $3,500 with support coming from throughout the country.
Now that Miss Gledhill has reached the $1,000 challenge she set herself, this coming Monday (1st Feb) she will undertake her daily commute into her job at DNA Design in Wellington, where she works, wearing not much more than a cardboard box.
Through her page on New Zealand charity website Fundraise Online alerting people to what she is doing, people have been giving generously; not only with donations, but also suggestions on other opportunities this “out of the box” appeal offers.
People have been suggesting that boxes be made available throughout the country, giving others the opportunity to join in and help raise funds to help the victims of the devastating earthquake which affected people right around the globe. Which would certainly open up opportunities for many others to help raise funds which are so desperately needed to help the victims of Haiti.
"We are thrilled with the response to Nicola's cardboard box and encourage New Zealanders to take up the box challenge. It's a fabulous example of how a small action can make a big difference," says Save the Children's chief executive Liz Gibbs,
"The money raised will go directly to Haiti for immediate emergency supplies as well as the long term recovery effort. We have over 200 staff on the ground and are committed to making sure the children and families in Haiti have a bright future.
Save the Children's Haiti Emergency Appeal has already raised over $500.000.
Nicola’s goal of $10,000 will provide so much for the victims of the Haiti earthquake; 2,800 buckets to help families carry clean water, 800 tarpaulins to provide basic shelter to protect families, 2260 mosquito kits to protect children from malaria.
To help support Nicola’s Cardboard Box Challenge please visit her FundraiseOnline Fundraising page (http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/nicola_for_haiti/), or through the Save the Children Fund appeal.
Anyone wanting to take up the cardboard box challenge will be able to download a poster from www.fundraiseonline.co.nz to stick on their box, to show what they are doing for the people of Haiti.
