Buskerburgoo - Weird Porridge Comes To Nelson
Buskerburgoo - Weird Porridge Comes To Nelson This Week
You’ll love the serving of burgoo that’s coming to Trafalgar Street with this year’s Buskers and Street Theatre Series. Bigger, better and quite different from previous years it’s been named Buskerburgoo after the porridge served on Lord Nelson’s ships.
Coordinator Chris Morley-Hall, famed in Wellington for his eclectic and amazing Cuba Street Carnival, says Buskerburgoo will be a rich mix of acts from around the world.
“This year all the events will be at the top of Trafalgar Street where we’re installing an aerial trapeze rig that brings a whole new dimension to the acts,” he says. “It’s going to create a great atmosphere for The Chaos R18 Revue, when we’ll have the area secured for two nights of stunning no holds barred late night circus cabaret.” (Friday Feb 5, Sat Feb 6 7-11pm)
Highlights in the Buskerburgoo programme include Fuse Circus with their outdoor high wire award wining show The Navigators, inspired by ocean voyaging and full of magic, danger and death defying stunts; Nick Nicholas, the sleight of hand master magician; veteran UK street performer, Herbie Treehead; award winning clown, Fraser Hooper, also from the UK, and Australia's most off the wall comic improviser, Anthony Livingspace.
“The Navigators is an amazing show that won the People’s Choice Award at the Christchurch Buskers’ Festival,” Morley-Hall says. “They and the other performers are street theatre legends, all with around 25 year’s experience - we are very lucky to get all four of them”
Morley-Hall says upper Trafalgar Street will be transformed for Buskerburgoo, and the entertainment will be non-stop: “When the lunchtime performances finish we have Cirque de Salon performing on their gypsy circus stage, working their avant garde wizardry with hair and facial makeovers – they ‘fill the gap’ until the evening entertainment starts.”
Buskerburgoo winds up with the Buskers’ Lament, on Sun 7 Feb at 6pm, a family finale where the buskers will be bringing out some hidden gems to say thanks to Nelson.
Buskerburgoo runs from Thurs 4 Feb to Sun 7 Feb. Summer in Nelson is produced by the Nelson City Council as a celebration for locals and an added attraction for visitors. Summer in Nelson booklets are now available at libraries, visitor centres and council offices throughout the region or you can check it out at www.nelsonfestivals.co.nz
