Three young New Zealand women are taking the tales of the Kiwi Overseas Experience (OE) to the world, promoting their travel anthology ‘Jandal Prints on the Globe’ at an international book fair in the United Arab Emirates this week.
Publishing director Renee Stead will join co-editor Rachel Pether in the Middle East where they will introduce the book to the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
“It may seem an unlikely corner of the world to progress into,” said Stead. “But we think its an exciting and relatively untapped book market that has capital to spare. The UAE has a high proportion of expats, and around 60% of the UAE population is under the age of 25, an ideal target audience.”
‘Jandal Prints on the Globe,’ an
anthology of short stories and photography capturing the
great New Zealand OE, is the brainchild of co-editors Jane
Gilkison and Rachel Pether and was brought to the market by
family publishing house Stead & Daughters Ltd.
The book
launched in conjunction with New Zealand Book Month in
October last year, and has been selling well in bookstores
and select gift shops around the country.
‘Jandal Prints
on the Globe’ takes the reader on a visual and captivating
journey from Tokyo to Transylvania, Iceland to Mexico. It
was conceptualised while Gilkison and Pether were travelling
and has already been touted round Europe by Stead when she
was part of the 2009 Frankfurt Publishing
Fellowship.
Gilkison, Pether and Stead are also
investigating other potential international markets for
distribution.
