Fool’s Paradise Dance Party

The Maya bar in Wellington’s Blair St will be open from 5pm on Saturday encouraging people to have a great Saturday night dance and support Surfbreak Protection Society and Coromandel Watchdog.

Michael Gunson, co-owner of Maya bar and Surfbreak Protection Society member wants people to “Come down and share a toast to the illusion of Clean Green New Zealand, and in doing so, help our Charity Tithe to the Coromandel Watchdog and the Surfbreak Protection Society, and those organisations efforts in saving our mountains and beaches.”

Surfbreak Protection is a Society dedicated to the conservation of the "treasures" of the New Zealand Surfing Community - the surfbreaks - through the preservation of their natural characteristics, water quality, marine eco systems and low impact access for all.

Coromandel Watchdog is a group that had recently become active again now that up to 50% of the Coromandel’s land that was protected is now again under threat of mining. They are finding that most people do not want their parks mined and will challenge all moves to open up these areas.

Surfrbreak Protection Society has concerns about mining, because of the potential contamination of the waterways which affect the coast, and in particular about the sand mining applications that are appearing around our coast, for example in the Taranaki and Coromandel.

The mining issue is running hot in the media and now that there are two special areas of the Coromandel under threat, behind Thames and behind Whangamata. “The surfing community already has serious concerns about this region after the Marina was built, and the sewerage system was found to be lacking, and the last thing this town needs is a mining threat - we wish the government would abandon their proposal rather than worrying who leaked the information to the public” says Michael Gunson,
