Dunedin Fringe Busking Blitz Set To Surprise

Dunedin Fringe Busking Blitz Set To Surprise
19 March 2010

Three of New Zealand’s top buskers are performing in Dunedin this week as part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival’s Busking Blitz.

For the first time in Dunedin Fringe history the four hour event will be held at the Otago Farmers Market from 9.00am til 1.00pm this Saturday the 20th March. The Busking Blitz is a showcase of talented New Zealand street theatre practitioners who put their skills to the test, and sometimes their lives on the line, for the audience’s pleasure. The Busking Blitz will feature a non-stop performance stage as well as a music busking stage showcasing a range of music styles, dancers, and comedians.

This year the Main Stage features the infamous Rubberband Man, Shay Horay, who holds the world record for the most rubberbands on a human face. Slim Pickin’s also returns to the Festival for a sword-swallowing extravaganza, along with chainsaw-juggler Chris Davis who performs his act atop a five meter pole held by members of the audience.

Highlights of the Music Stage include local African dance and drumming group Song Bong and world music band Mama Yeva.

Keep an eye out for stilt walkers from Auckland based company The Dust Palace, who are previewing their show Burlesque As You Like It-Not A Family Show, which takes place at the Regent Theatre next week on 26-27 March.

Festival Director, Paul Smith says “It’s a vibrant family event and best of all it’s an opportunity for the public to experience the Festival for free at one of our most vibrant locations.”
