South Auckland Artists Shine At Royal Easter Show Art Awards

The winners of the 2010 Royal Easter Show Art Awards, New Zealand’s largest art competition, were announced at a special presentation tonight.

Open to artists of all ages, amateur and professional and with thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs, the competition attracted around 2,000 entries.

South Auckland came out tops in the major awards with three local artists scooping four awards. Wood turner and previous winner Terry Scott of Papakura won best overall wood turner and supreme exhibit in show. Kimber Brown and Rosita Manning of Pukekohe won most successful photographer in show, with Kimber also winning best overall photograph.

From West Auckland, Annie McIver of Titirangi and Anne Lamb of Glen Eden won the top awards in pottery and ceramics.

Melody Brook of Pakuranga in East Auckland, won two awards including best overall painting in show and winner of this year’s competition theme ‘Reflections of New Zealand’.

While most successful artist in show and best watercolour painting went to Lower Hutt artist Jacky Pearson, who also won best watercolour at last year’s awards.

Northland artist Donna Feary of Kerikeri also received best in the glass category.

Judge Greg Moyle, who is Chairman of the Auckland City Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee and a renowned art collector, said the quality of entries was of a very high standard and made judging extraordinarily difficult.

“While we were limited in the numbers of prizes awarded, many more works were equally deserving of a prize.

“Undoubtedly the largest unselected and judged exhibition in New Zealand, the variety of works will appeal to a wide cross section of viewers.”

All winning entries are on display and for sale at reasonable prices at the Royal Easter Show on from 1-5 April at the ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane, Auckland.

Main award winners:

- Best overall painting in show K G Fraser Art Award, NZ Country by Melody Brook of Pakuranga, Auckland
- Best watercolour painting in Raye Hannam Memorial Trophy, Queenstown Quiet by Jacky Pearson of Lower Hutt
- Royal Agricultural Society Medal for most successful artist in show, Jacky Pearson of Lower Hutt
- Winner of this year’s Royal Easter Show theme, NZ Country by Melody Brook of Pakuranga, Manukau
- Best overall photograph, Scarlet Feast by Kimber Brown of Pukekohe
- Most successful photographer of show, Kimber Brown and Rosita Manning both of Pukekohe
- Best overall wood turner, Terry Scott of Papakura, Auckland
- Supreme woodcraft exhibit in show, At The Beach by Terry Scott of Papakura, Auckland
- Best in pottery category, Crackle Glass Hare by Annie McIver of Titirangi, Auckland
- Best in slipcasting ceramics category, Boat House by Anne Lamb of Glen Eden, Auckland
- Best in glass category, Ginger by Donna Feary of Kerikeri, Northland
