'Another great river falls'

'Another great river falls'

Today's announcement that a resource consent is being given to dam and virtually destroy the magnificent Mokihinui River on the West Coast is astounding. Yet another of our few remaining iconic rivers falls in the interests of very short term gain - and to what end? To power the mining needed to export our precious, non-renewable coal? Coal that may well be used overseas to generate power? What hypocrisy!

What of the alternative power generation systems like wind and tide - and even to consider the new coal burning low emission stations? Or even putting nuclear on the table, for at least some consideration?

We have these alternatives and yet in the face of considerable opposition, government proposes to destroy an irreplaceable river of considerable scenic beauty and a wonderful fishery, forever.

Where do your long term priorities lie? The public will not let the matter rest.
