V-Day Christchurch Presents The Vagina Monologues
V-Day Christchurch 2010
Presents a Benefit
Production of
The Vagina
Monologues
V-Day Christchurch 2010 is
proud to present a benefit production of Eve Ensler’s The
Vagina Monologues between April 24 - 26th at the Philip
Carter Family Auditorium at the Christchurch Art
Gallery.
Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," The Vagina Monologues, which was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. Ms. Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world.
Last year
over 4200 communities hosted V-Day benefits and raised funds
of over $4 million around the world to help end violence
against women. A group of Christchurch actresses have this
year joined this global movement as part of the V Day 2010
Campaign.
Producers and Directors Sarah Campagnolo and
Julia Capon are staging the production as part of the V-Day
Campaign between February and May 2010. Campagnolo and Capon
feel The Vagina Monologues raise important issues for both
women and men and based on feedback from the Christchurch
community expect that tickets to the three night only
performance will sell quickly.
The campaign will raise
money to end violence towards women and girls. 90% of
profits from The Vagina Monologues will be returned to
Christchurch Women’s Refuge Centre and The Monarch House,
with the remaining 10% returned to “Stop Raping Our
Greatest Resource: Power To The Women And Girls Of The
Democratic Republic of Congo”, a campaign led since 2007
by V-Day and UNICEF.
The Vagina Monologues will be
performed at The Philip Carter Family Auditorium in the
Christchurch Art Gallery at 7.30pm on the 24th, 25th and
26th of April. Tickets are $22/$22.50 online and may be
purchased through the Court Theatre (box office or online at
www.courttheatre.org.nz), or on the night of the performance
on the door. All proceeds benefit the Christchurch Womens
Refuge Centre, Monarch House and V-day.
What is V Day?
V-Day is a global
movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is
a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase
awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing
anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader
attention for the fight to stop violence against women and
girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital
mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.
The V-Day movement is growing at a rapid pace throughout the world, in 130 countries from Europe to Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, and all of North America. V-Day, a non-profit corporation, distributes funds to grassroots, national and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls. In 2001, V-Day was named one of Worth Magazine's "100 Best Charities" and in 2006 one of Marie Claire Magazine’s Top Ten Charities. In eleven years, the V-Day movement has raised over $70 million.
