Auckland’s Next Stella Artois Draught Master

Who Will Be Auckland’s Next Stella Artois Draught Master?

Search begins for New Zealand’s best Stella Artois beer pourer

Auckland bartenders are gearing up to compete in the Stella Artois Draught Masters in a bid to win a spot in the national finals.

On August 4, De Fontein in Mission Bay will host the Auckland regional finals to find the bartenders who have perfected the art of the 9-Step Belgian Pouring Ritual.

The winners from De Fontein will go up against other regional winners from Wellington and Christchurch to compete for the New Zealand Draught Master title in the national finals on September 10. The person crowned the New Zealand Draught Master will then fly to London to represent New Zealand in the 2010 Stella Artois World Draught Masters competition on October 24.

The timed competition requires contestants to perform a seven-minute Belgian beer pouring ritual. The centuries-old pour requires polished expertise in the art of pouring a perfect beer from the tap as well as the bottle, not to mention skill in the art of hospitality and an in-depth knowledge of the history and taste profile of the beer. Contestants’ style and social skills such as spontaneity, eye contact, sociability and serving technique at the table will also be under the judges’ spotlight.

The Stella Artois 9-Step Pouring Ritual epitomises the brand's continual quest for perfection to guarantee that Stella Artois is served with the same care, consideration and craftsmanship that has gone into more than 600 years of brewing.

New Zealand has won the World Draught Master title three times in the competition’s 13-year history In 2002, Simon McGorman became the first New Zealander to ever win the world title, and then in 2007 Erin Carroll became the World Draught Master champion. Christchurch local Avril Maxwell is the newest addition to the line-up having won the world title in New York last year.

Winners of the World Draught Master title become Stella Artois ambassadors and travel the world to oversee that every chalice of Stella Artois is poured properly and served just right.

Originating in 1997, the Stella Artois World Draught Masters is the only international draught master competition making this award one of the most prestigious and recognised titles to be bestowed upon bartenders around the world.
