Auckland belly dance performer and instructor Tais Derbasova has been selected as a finalist to compete in the inaugural Australian Belly Dance Star Awards in Sydney on Friday 20th August 2010.
Tais, who is originally from Russia and now lives permanently in New Zealand, is the only New Zealander to compete in the contest, and will perform in the Professional Soloist Category.
She hopes the event will help raise the profile and promote the health benefits of this elegant form of dance amongst New Zealand women.
“Belly Dance is a beautiful art form that's great for women’s health and fitness as a really fun and creative form of alternative exercise,” says Tais.
“It’s well known around the world for assisting women with weight loss, stress reduction, improved posture and muscle toning - not to mention boosting women’s self-esteem and confidence”.
Tais, who has been a New Zealand permanent resident for over three years, teaches the ancient dance style to women and girls at her own Tais Belly Dance school in Auckland and performs at a variety of Auckland events and venues. She’s hoping that the popularity that belly dancing enjoys in Australia will spread to New Zealand.
“Belly dancing is already big in Australia and it’s just starting to catch on here in New Zealand.
“I’m really proud to be competing at an Australian competition and it’d be fantastic if I could steal the show for New Zealand. It’d be great to add the “Belly Dance Cup” to the “Bledisloe Cup” for 2010!”
The Australian finals event will be judged by three judges including the world famous Egyptian belly dancer Dina. For more details on the event, click here.
