Farewell to KBB Music Festival Chairperson

Farewell to KBB Music Festival Chairperson after 13 Years

The 2010 KBB Music Festival will be the last for one of its longest-serving committee members and main driving force. After 18 years as committee member, 13 years as Chairperson and 9 years as Administrator for the KBB Music Festival, David Squire will be resigning from his roles to focus on his postgraduate studies in choral conducting.
-
- “I have thoroughly enjoyed working for the Festival over the past 18 years,” says Mr Squire. “It was a difficult decision to resign from my positions.” Apart from his vital roles with the KBB Music Festival, Mr Squire is also heavily involved in music education.
-
- He was Head of Instrumental Music at Westlake Girls High School (1996-2001) and Director of Music at Manurewa High School (2002-2005), as well as a founding member of TOWER Voices New Zealand and the V8 Vocal Ensemble. Since 2006 he has been a freelance musician and educator. “David’s passion for music and unwavering dedication to the festival for almost two decades is immense,” says Alan Kemp, Managing Director of KBB Music and Festival Committee member. “We’ve got some big shoes to fill and I think it is fair to say that David will be sorely missed by everyone.”
-
- “I’d like to thank the KBB Music Festival Committee for supporting me in my roles, especially for their enthusiasm and commitment to the Festival which is such a valued event in our musical calendar,” says Mr Squire. “I look forward to continuing my involvement in the Festival as a conductor.”
-
- 2010 marks the 27th anniversary of the KBB Music Festival, formerly known as the Auckland Secondary Schools Band and Orchestra Festival. Over the years it has grown from its humble beginnings of playing in school halls, to a week-long event held in the acoustically professional venues of the Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE – the same venues used by the country’s top professional musicians. This year there will be a record 126 groups representing almost 50 schools in the greater Auckland region. A total of more than 3,000 student musicians will be involved, making it one of the largest youth music festivals in New Zealand.
-
- The KBB Music Festival will conclude with two Gala Concerts featuring the best groups selected by the adjudicators at 2pm and 6.30pm on Sunday 29th of August at the Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE.
-
- The public are encouraged to attend free adjudicated performances on 24-27 August at the Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE, to support our young musicians. Tickets to the stirring Gala Concerts can be purchased from THE EDGE www.buytickets.co.nz or phone 09 357-3355 ($15 general admission for each concert, or $25 for both concerts).
