Work to develop good players in Otago
Otago Rugby and Good Group work to develop Good Players
Otago Rugby Union is on the fundraising trail in a bid to keep young rugby stars in Otago – and a new scholarship is to specifically target Southern Lakes young talent.
The Otago Rugby Southern Lakes Scholarship aims to provide scholarships for six Southern Lakes rugby players of school leaving age. $5000 per year for two years will be invested in those players to help fund tertiary education fees, accommodation, travel, specialized developmental coaching and clothing and footwear.
A local subcommittee comprising Kelvin Collins, Rob Fiske and Simon Spark has been appointed to select the scholarship winners.
Otago Rugby Union Commercial Manager Mike Kerr says the idea is to identify, develop and retain home grown talent for the future success of rugby in Otago.
“Our young rugby players are being actively approached to join other provincial unions ... it’s imperative we give those boys every reason not to leave their home ground.
“With this initiative, we are offering a pathway for young rugby players. Otago Rugby needs not just good players, but good people with the right attitude, determination and ability,” says Mr Kerr.
Kicking off the fundraising to support the scholarship program is a charity function to be hosted by Queenstown’s Good Group next month.
The charity auction and dinner takes place at Botswana Butchery on Wednesday, September 15 from 7pm. Good Group General Manager Sales and Operations Sarah Stacey says local people are encouraged to attend for a great evening out as well as to support young rugby players.
“It’s always good to get along to Botswana Butchery and this event will be extra special. Expect an array of rugby memorabilia along with plenty of interesting and fun items to be auctioned by Chris Campbell of Locations Realty. Good Group CEO Russell Gray will be master of ceremonies... It’s bound to be very entertaining.”
Otago Rugby requires $40,000 in year one rising to $70,000 in year two, plus a $10,000 contingency fund.
“We’re delighted to support this cause and help offer our kids a pathway that allows them to stay in this region while reaching for the top of their game,” says Ms Stacey.
Tickets are $100 per seat and include a three course dinner and glass of bubbly on arrival.
