Son of Joe Louis Changing Kiwi Kids Lives

6 October 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Son of Joe Louis Changing Kiwi Kids Lives

The First Tee CEO Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., son of boxing legend Joe Louis, will arrive in New Zealand this weekend.

Barrow’s charismatic leadership, dedication and enthusiasm have brought about significant growth in the youth development initiative since it was launched; now reaching 3.5 million participants.

Barrow’s own heritage is at the heart of The First Tee’s mission. His father, - legendary world heavyweight boxer champion Joe Louis - became a campaigner for diversity in golf after experiencing firsthand racial discrimination on American golf courses.

Today, Barrow continues to reinforce the organisation’s simple rule that no child will be excluded from participating, regardless of colour, sex, parentage or family income.

The First Tee is dedicated to providing children with the opportunity to learn character development and life enhancing skills through ‘Nine Core Values’: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.

Since its launch in New Zealand the program has been offered in the Auckland region, and has embarked on an expansion programme to reach more of the country.
