Wellington schools put their thinking caps on
New Zealanders are known for their ingenuity and more great young innovators will have the chance to show off their skills in devising and developing gadgets and gizmos, using simple materials such as paper, cardboard, string and sellotape.
41 local Primary and Intermediate schools will put their best team of students forward for an exercise in hands-on, minds-on learning in the Wellington Region BP Challenge on the 18 November, at the College of Education in Karori.
The event aims to foster ingenuity, problem-solving and teamwork, in a fun environment. Members of the Royal Society of New Zealand have been responsible for its planning and organisation and some 420 students will take part in this year’s event.
Typically, Challenge events ask the students to design and construct a device that meets specified performance criteria; using simple materials such as newspaper, sellotape and string. This year all teams will bring along a Board Game and poster they’ve made using only set materials, and then will compete in an exciting ‘Mystery’ Challenge.
The Wellington Region BP Challenge will take place:
At: Main Hall, College of Education, Donald St, Karori
On: Thursday 18th November
Time: 9.00am – 2.30pm
The event is sponsored by BP Oil NZ and managed by the Royal Society of New Zealand. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend. More information can be found at www.royalsocietyorg.nz/bp_challenge
