Boy the People’s Choice at Visa Entertainment Screen Awards

Boy the People’s Choice at the inaugural Visa Entertainment Screen Awards.

Auckland, 9 December 2010

Box office hit Boy has capped off its award-winning record-breaking year with a big pat on the back from Kiwis all over New Zealand, taking home the major trophies at the inaugural Visa Entertainment Screen Awards.

These People’s Choice awards for the big screen were dished out at a star-studded ceremony last night, hosted by Kate Rodger, from TV3’s Reel Late with Kate.

13 year old James Rolleston, who plays Boy in the film, won Best NZ Actor, despite tough competition from big name actors, Sam Neill, Taika Waititi and Martin Henderson.

Rolleston also won Best Newcomer, Waititi won Best Director, and they finished the evening off with the big award of the night, Best NZ Film.

Rose McIver from The Lovely Bones won Best NZ Actress, fighting off strong bids from well- known names Keisha Castle-Hughes and Melanie Lynskey.

Celebrating home-grown film at its finest, the Visa Entertainment Screen Awards gave New Zealand movie lovers the opportunity to have their say, voting for their favourite local films and other industry awards.

Rodger was thrilled with the awards; "The inaugural Visa Entertainment Screen Awards were a huge success, a fantastic celebration of our New Zealand film industry and our unique Kiwi culture. The people have spoken and their votes have determined the best of the best in Kiwi film for 2010”.
