Taupō’s Inaugural Waiters Race set for Sunday 6 February

Towncentre Taupō has joined forces with Lion Nathan to run a fun Waiters Race for local hospitality staff, as part of the Great Lake Taupō Multicultural Festival, on Sunday 6 February.

“We wanted to run a fun event for all those hard working hospitality people,” explains Towncentre Taupō General Manager, Kylie Hawker. “It’s been a busy summer season, so we thought it was time to have some fun and create a new annual challenge for this industry.”

The race will be a relay from the Amphitheatre at Riverside Park, to Bond Lounge Bar on Tuwharetoa Street, with teams of four competing for plenty of prizes that have been donated by event sponsor, Lion Nathan.

“We very aware that so many of our hospitality staff in Taupō are from all around the world, so we thought it made great sense to organize something as part of the new Great Lake Taupō Festival which is all about celebrating our multi-cultural diversity,” said Ms Hawker. “As such, we’re asking that each team has at least one member who was born outside of New Zealand, at least one female and at least three of the four team members must work at the same local bar, restaurant, hotel or other hospitality provider.”

The relay will involve a challenge for each member, involving different aspects of the hospitality trade.

“We’re encouraging teams to dress up, and really have some fun with this event,” said Ms Hawker. “It will be great spectator entertainment!”

To register for the event, teams are asked to contact Traceylee Hooton at the Towncentre Taupō Office, or visit the Towncentre Taupō website for more information – www.towncentretaupo.co.nz .
