National Hillclimb Championship Round
National Hillclimb Championship Round
in
Dunedin
The OSCC is proud to announce Dunedin is hosting a qualifying round of the New Zealand National Hillclimb Championship on the 29th and 30th of January - and looks forward to drivers from around the South Island challenging Dunedin’s best local drivers.
Dunedin has not hosted a National Championship round since the series was known as the Goldstar Hillclimb Championship in the 1970s when competitors would travel from as far a field as Auckland to compete.
The Championship consists two qualifying weekends in each island, with one day on tarmac and one on gravel. The Championship final round alternates between the islands year to year, 2011 being in the South Island.
Dunedin’s tarmac event will be the Waitati Hillclimb. This sealed road was a regular hillclimb for the OSCC, but has not been used for over a decade. The road is very twisty with technical challenges making it a great drivers’ hillclimb.
The gravel event will be the classic Whare Flat Hillclimb. This iconic Otago hillclimb in itself attracts competitors from around the South Island and is a favourite in the OSCC’s calendar and in the Rally of Otago.
The weekend will conclude with prize-giving at the OSCC clubrooms in Larnach road.
