NZ Transport Agency’s annual competition

Year 2 students at Auckland’s Green Bay Primary and Intermediate School will be celebrating their victory in the NZ Transport Agency’s annual walk to school story book competition with a launch event at the school tomorrow (Friday 18 February).

The Green Bay students wrote and illustrated Crazy Hat Day, about the adventures of three friends who learn how to get to school safely while dressed in novelty headwear that makes walking and cycling a real challenge.

Their story came out on too in the nationwide competition open to all classes registered with the NZTA’s Feet First walk to school programme. Students had to write and illustrate a picture book with the theme of safe and active travel.

The prize for Room 22 at Green Bay was getting their book printed and copies sent to every primary school in New Zealand. The students worked with a professional editor and illustrator to prepare the book for publication.

Jennie Gianotti, the NZTA Education Manager, says Green Bay's book was an outstanding one of many strong entries. “It’s a wonderful thing for students to be published authors at such a young age and they learnt some important lessons on road safety too. Their book drew on everything they've learned.”
