Christchurch based cyclists leave damaged city to kick off international season in Singapore

Three Christchurch based members of The SUBWAY® Pro Cycling Team leave the earthquake damaged city to kick off the team’s international season this weekend against a mix of world Champions, world record holders and Commonwealth Games Gold medallists in the OCBC Cycle Singapore Professional Criterium on Saturday night.

Hayden Godfrey, Paul Odlin and Jason Allen join Auckland based Nick Lovegrove to race in the Criterium which will be held under lights.

“It’s fair to say the Christchurch based riders have had some serious challenges, along with the rest of the city. Our thoughts are with those who have lost much more than us,” Godfrey said.

“It’s tough leaving but we’ve decided to still go and give it our best over there. Getting back into as normal routine as soon as possible seems to be a key message that is being given.”

The criterium is the feature event in a festival of cycling weekend and over 80 professionals from around the world have entered lead by Garmin-Cervelo Pro Team teammates Cameron Meyer and Jack Bobridge.

Godfrey said they were looking forward to racing in the event against some of the world’s best riders.

Allen has finished third in the event before and is in good form after winning two national titles, including the individual pursuit, at the recent RaboDirect New Zealand track championships in Invercargill and Lovegrove won the Counties Manukau senior road race at the weekend.

The criterium is held on the Singapore F1 circuit and 2011 is the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling Team’s third year racing internationally as a UCI registered professional team.
