Hong Kong is Always in a Festive Mood

Hong Kong is Always in a Festive Mood

No matter what time of the year you visit, there is always a colourful festival or cultural celebration happening in Hong Kong.

Festivals start with Chinese New Year which is welcomed in with a spectacular fireworks display and a huge parade of colourful floats.

Other festivals include the Cantonese and Taoist festivals for the gods Tin Ha, Luen Long and Tsing Yi in April. Tin Ha is one of the territory’s most popular goddesses and this festival honours her as the patroness of fisherfolk and sailors. During May birthday celebrations are held throughout major monasteries for the Lord Buddha. During this festival Buddha’s statue is taken from various monasteries and temples around Hong Kong and ceremonially bathed in scented water.

Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, home to the Giant Buddha, draws the biggest crowds during the May celebrations with local worshippers showing their devotion by bathing a small Buddha statue. Visitors can participate in the bathing ceremony and enjoy a sumptuous Chinese vegetarian meal at the Monastery. The Cheung Chau Bun Festival is also observed in May, when you will see huge towers made up of buns, and also a procession of ornately dressed children who are held aloft the crowds on high bamboo poles.

“Hong Kong is home to some of the most amazing cultural festivals and we are excited to offer some fantastic packages throughout the year so everyone has the opportunity to immerse themselves in truly Chinese cultural celebrations,” says Dave Nicholson, General Manager, Adventure World.
