All Corners of the earth at Golden Shears

All Corners of the earth were at the Golden Shears opening events

All Corners of the earth were already represented in one of this year’s Golden Shears opening events, the New Image Junior Shearing Heats held at Masterton’s War Memorial Stadium this morning.

Competitors from as far as Japan, South Africa and the UK took to the stage this morning, giving a true indication of just how far reaching the sport of shearing truly is.

Organisers are welcoming global attention for the three day event, particularly in the run up to next year’s World Shearing Championships which are to be held in conjunction with the 2012 Golden Shears.

Considered to be the pinnacle of shearing contests, the last World Championships were in held in Wales in 2010. Twenty-seven countries were represented at the event and early indicators point towards as much international interest for Masterton’s event next year.

*CAPTION: *Sweating it out during the Golden Shears Junior Shearing Heats this morning was Tokyo-born shearer Shun Oishi. The 31-year old is competing in the Golden Shears triathlon; he’ll also be judged for his woolhandling and wool pressing talent. Shun has already won three junior shearing titles in New Zealand this season, in Nelson, Rangiora and Murchison. He has also made four other finals
