New Zealand children paint a picture of ‘Life in the Forest’

Auckland, 3 March 2011 New Zealand’s next generation of eco-warriors is being encouraged by Bayer and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) to enter the 20th International Children’s Painting Competition on the environment.

The competition is open to entrants aged 6 – 14, who are encouraged to paint an A3 or A4 sized picture to theme. The theme for 2011 is biodiversity and ‘Life in the Forest’ to coincide with the United Nation’s International Year of the Forest.

Children entering the competition have the chance to win US$2000 and a fully paid trip to attend the Tunza International Children’s Conference in Canada this June.

Bayer New Zealand hopes that the competition will encourage children to learn about New Zealand’s unique forest environment, and to pick up a brush in order to promote its continued protection.

Bayer spokesperson, William Malpass, says “New Zealand has always been a clean, green country that feels passionately about the environment…New Zealanders really care about trying to preserve our forests and endangered native species.

“I really encourage children in New Zealand to enter this competition and help showcase our unique forest environment to the world. We’re hoping for the first international winner from New Zealand in 2011.”

Results will be announced at an award ceremony in mid 2011 with winning entries later exhibited at different locations around the world. Last year’s winning entries can be viewed at the official Bayer and UNEP website: www.unep.bayer.com
