The World’s Smallest Library

MEDIA RELEASE:
11 March 2011

The World’s Smallest Library

In addition to the 60+ artists and galleries opening their studios to the public, the Whanganui Artists Open Studios proudly presents the New Zealand premier of ‘The World’s Smallest Library’.

A telephone booth has been transformed into an oasis of literary expression as artists, writers and community members swap their treasured books or verse. This is a wonderful way to share favourite reads involving the whole community. "Books need to be shared, I can't wait to get stuck into somebody else's best read. So far the books that have come in are an eclectic bunch of pre-loved gems" says spokesperson Jo Ockey. The working telephone box is sited outside The Big Orange Café on Victoria Avenue. ‘The World’s Smallest Library’ will be open from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm from Saturday 19th until Tuesday 29th March. If you would like to share your best read please send to Wanganui District Library, Queens Park, Whanganui or visit the telephone box and trade your verse in.

It is planned that along side the ‘The World’s Smallest Library' will be ‘The World's Smallest Publishing House’. The poet David Merritt will perform now and then. He warns his current publishing model - consisting of using recycled hardback books saved from landfill (Readers Digest Condensed, Jeffery Archer, etc as the raw materials of his new publications) and a park bench - is not for everyone. The old morph into literary poetry delights!

All welcome to join in 'book activism' as part of New Zealand Book Month and the 11th annual Whanganui Artists Open Studios.
