Riverton Artist To Go Inland To Lumsden

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Inland” Wayne Hill
Fusion Gallery and studio, Lumsden
13th March 2011

Controvercial Riverton Artist To Go Inland To Lumsden

There is anticipation and excitement in the air this week surrounding the opening of Wayne Hills solo exhibition "Inland" at Fusion Gallery and studio in Lumsden. A culmination of Hills hard work the exhibition promises to push boundaries and engage the viewing public in an array of driftwood stretched canvases, diverse wooden creations and thought provoking abstract landscapes.

Wayne Hill will perhaps be best known for his controversial driftwood sculptures that have engaged (and sometimes enraged) the locals in the Riverton estuary that began to sporadically pop up over the course of some months last year. An intensely personal project for Hill became a scrutinized debate for many as his artwork became lost in translation. Some saw the artwork for what it was, a beautiful gift to Riverton and its locals, while others found it offensive, so much so that some creations were attacked and dismembered before they were able to be enjoyed. Although the bad intentions of some could have marred the artist’s passion to create, it pushed Hill harder as the support for his creations far outweighed the criticisms.

Hill is also quite well known for pushing the boundaries of what is considered art. A man that can find an artistic use for anything, that can easily be related back to artwork in his current exhibition "Inland" as many canvases have been uniquely stretched over driftwood that prove art is indeed whatever you make it. The collection offers art enthusiasts the chance to purchase something uniquely genuine from an artist forging a long term name for himself that will indeed add value to all his current creations.

Another interesting part to this exhibition that has come to light recently is the intense generosity of Hill as he has decided to donate half of all profits he makes from the exhibition to the Christchurch Red Cross earthquake appeal. Hill said the reason behind this generous offer to be “because I have a heart and I feel”.

Regarding this particular exhibition at Fusion Wayne has been quoted as saying “I’m inspired by many things and being asked to go inland has opened up many more doors of inspiration, The Earth moving you could say”.

Gallery co ordinator Michelle Wallis said "Fusion Gallery is honored to host an artist of Wayne's caliber and talent, his personality and heart is evident within all his artworks, he has also been an extremely supportive artist of this gallery since its inception last year and to be able to come full circle and present this exhibition is just amazing".

Inland will open this Friday night March the 18th at 7.30pm at Fusion Gallery and studio with Wayne planning to hold an artist’s talk at 8pm, refreshments will be provided and everyone is welcome to attend. The exhibition will then be open from the 19th until the 3rd of April, Saturdays 10 - 3 and Sundays 11 - 2. Wayne is also scheduled to be an artist in Residence on April the 20th and again the following Saturday the 26th of March, and hopes as many people as possible come to see him while he is there.
