The Film Archive presents From Thorndon to
Island Bay...
...and all the way to
Christchurch
With moving images of the way the City of Wellington used to be, the New Zealand Film Archive is sending a moving message to the City of Christchurch.
The Film Archive is proud to screen a special presentation of the Traveling Film Show, From Thorndon to Island Bay, next Thursday March 24, Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26, with all proceeds going to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.
Film Archive staff initiated the event to pay homage to the City of Christchurch and assist with the relief efforts, and remind Wellingtonians of how their city has developed. Entry is a $10 donation to the government’s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

From Thorndon to Island Bay is a compilation of 10 short films with live piano accompaniment by Gilbert Haisman, featuring rare and captivating archival footage of Wellington from 1925 to 1999.
Wellingtonians with a long connection to the Capital through to those who have recently settled here, and those just passing through, can see film that tracks the city’s development through the ages.
Films include a 1925 cinematic promotion of Wellington produced by the Government Publicity Office, three short films showing 1940s Island Bay, fancy ‘new’ aircraft touching down at Wellington Airport 1937-38 and the Chrysler Hell Drivers bashing and smashing their old Plymouth and DeSoto cars.
Post-war, there’s a look back at the nuns and girls from Erskine College 1949-50, the farewell to trams 1964-65, some hilarious BLERTA vignettes and Country Calendar spoofs re-released in 1999.
Fans of film and the City we live in are encouraged to join the Film Archive for the special Christchurch Earthquake Relief presentation of From Thorndon to Island Bay
