Nominations closing for Sports Awards comeback
Nominations for the resurrected Hutt City Sports Awards are now being taken, but you better be quick as they close on Wednesday 30 March.
After a 22 year hiatus, the Awards are making a comeback and will consist of nine award categories plus an overall winner.
Spearheaded by first-term Hutt City Councillor and long-time sports celebrity Ken Laban, the Awards, to be held on 5 May, are set to feature a star-studded guest line-up.
All Blacks coach Graham Henry is confirmed as the guest speaker, while MC extraordinaire Keith Quinn will lead the evening’s proceedings.
Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace says it is great to see the Hutt City Sports Awards making a long awaited return.
“We have seen so many talented athletes from Lower Hutt over the years. I commend Ken and his team for their work to recognise our local sportsmen and women again in this way and I am looking forward to the awards ceremony.”
Categories include Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Young Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Disabled Athlete of the Year, Official of the Year, and Administrator/Volunteer of the Year, with winners of each category announced on the evening, along with an Overall Winner.
In addition to the nine award categories, time will be taken during the evening to recognise historical achievements during the Awards’ absence. A dedicated team has worked through a mountain of records to dig out a number of very deserving athletes from the past 22 years.
The Hutt City Sportsperson of the Year trophy was last awarded in 1988 to current CEO of SPARC, Peter Miskimmin for his achievements in the sport of Hockey.
