Black Grace ¬ Verses comes to Nelson
Black Grace ¬ Verses comes to Nelson
New Zealand¹s top modern dance company, Black Grace is bringing its new show Verses to Nelson next month.
Verses is a collection of new short works by Black Grace¹s Founder and Artistic Director Neil Ieremia, inspired by his favourite music from the likes of David Bowie, Talking Heads and Johnny Cash.
Black Grace have had rave reviews and performed to thousands across North America and Canada, and Verses was described by the New Zealand Herald as Œpolished, pungent, bone-crunchingly physical and perfectly executed alchemy of music, muscle and motion¹.
Theatre Royal Manager Janice Marthen says it is a coup to have them perform in Nelson as part of the Top of the South Arts Touring Consortium programme.
³This is a show that¹s alive with music, movement and beautiful bodies, it¹s got music we know and love, it¹s got personality,² she said. ³Above all it¹s accessible ¬ a show to convert people back to going to see dance as a great night out.²
Verses is made up of nine short pieces including a solo to David Bowie¹s ŒUnder Pressure¹ with Sean McDonald bare-chested in designer jeans; and ŒVoodoo Child¹ with the whole company in fast and physical dance with falls, running, drops, leaps, turns, and aerials to Jimi Hendrix¹s guitar.
Black Grace Verses opened in the North Island last week (April 13) and the Top of the South tour commences at the Ashburton Events Centre on Tuesday May 10, performing in Nelson at the Theatre Royal on Friday May 13 and Saturday May 14 at 7.30pm, finishing at the Marlborough Civic Theatre in Blenheim on Monday May 16 at 7.30pm.
The prices have been arranged to make the show affordable to families and students. Nelson prices are: adults $39.50, students $20.00 and family $35 per adult and $15 per child. Royal Family members, seniors and friends of Nelson School of Music $35.00. Tickets are available through Everyman Records Hardy Street, Nelson, ph: 03 548 3083, www.everyman.co.nz
