CHARTFEST 2011, Christchurch's NZ Music Month live music extravaganza, is set to return on Saturday 14 May at the new location of CPIT’s student association (CPSA) building and grounds on Madras St., Christchurch.

With the generous support of CPIT, CCC and Smokefree, CHARTFEST in its fourth year moves in a new direction, with an exciting line up and range of music related activities. Christchurch’s annual May festival keeps the tradition of shining a light on the city's hottest emerging acts as well as honouring some important alumni.

1990’s progressive art punk rockers SQUIRM reform and play a rare Christchurch show and join an incredible line up of South Island grown talent such as the RDU98.5FM Dux de Lux RoundUp winners THE GUEST and the UCSA Battle of the Bands champions VON VOIN STRUM and the Lyttelton super group THE HARBOUR UNION featuring the Harbour’s finest musical talent. Al Park, Lindon Puffin, Delaney Davidson, and members of The Eastern, Unfaithful Ways and Tiny Lies will perform songs from their earthquake benefit album due for release in May. Keep an eye out for other special guests on the night.

Festival organizer Jeff Fulton explains the resistance to postpone the event despite the damage caused by the February quake “the effect on the music scene has been dramatic but our team were determined to continue, get everyone together and fly a flag for Christchurch”. With sponsors and supporters help CHARTFEST 2011 is being held at the CPSA complex at CPIT, a safe, structurally approved single level venue with a grassed outdoor area is ideal for hosting the 2011 event.

CHARTFEST 2011 kicks off at 1.30pm with a free all-ages afternoon event including a MUSIC INDUSTRY & CAREER EXPO, aspiring musicians chance to meet NZ music industry rep’ and personalities. In association with APRA, soul jazz artist L.A Mitchell (Fly My Pretties, Dukes) will host a song-writing clinic, while other notable musicians will present clinics on drums and guitars.

At 4pm the BAND SEARCH finals aim to find Canterbury’s best school band with talent from the region’s talented up-and-coming musicians - the winner going on to perform with New Zealand's leading metal act TAINTED at Zebedees (all ages) from 8pm. The doors to the CHARTFEST 2011 LIVE SESSIONS open at 7pm and tickets are strictly limited, only $15.00 plus booking fee on sale now from cosmicticketing.co.nz.

Travelling 17690 kilometers to join the likes of Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal, Pulp and Manic Street Preachers is Auckland-based group Batucada Sound Machine, who have been picked to play on the main stage at the renowned Sziget Festival in the coming European summer. Hungary’s week long Sziget Festival attracts 390,000 partygoers annually and is one of Europe’s largest music festivals, rivaling Glastonbury; and only a few New Zealand bands have ever made the prestigious main-stage lineup in the 19 years the event has run. The Sziget festival is just one stop in Batucada Sound Machine’s hectic six week tour through Europe in July and August; other festivals include The City of London Festival, Larmer Tree, and Horizonte Festival in Germany. The group will also perform for the second time at a secret, unnamable and invitation-only festival in the UK, whose guest list regularly includes the likes of Sting and Kate Middleton. This is the third time the 10-piece gr
oup have embarked on a European tour, having previously wowed audiences with their Brazilian, Cuban and Afro-beat rhythms at Ollin Kan, WOMAD, Wereldfeest and Edinburgh Fringe festivals. Batucada Sound Machine perform in Auckland at 4.20 on the 6th of May as a lead-up to their departure in July.

Wellington drummer and composer Reuben Bradley has taken out the Tui for Best Jazz Album of 2010/11 with his debut album Resonator (Rattle Records), composed on Bradley’s return to NZ following tuition from master jazz drummer Barry Altschul in New York. It features original songs and performances by a number of Australasian musicians including Roger Manins, Miles Crayford, Mostyn Cole, Kirsten Te Rito, James Illingworth and Tom Callwood. While the award was presented over the weekend at the 49th Tauranga National Jazz Festival, Bradley will also be acknowledged at the New Zealand Music Awards in November. The other finalists were Christchurch’s Sumo Jazz for ‘Throwing Salt’ and Tessa Quayle for ‘Whisper Not’.

You can also watch the video for Fields and Fields, which was performed, recorded and filmed completely live at the historic and dilapidated Erskine College. The band completed as series of performances there with Bryson Rooney which you will get to see very soon. There is also an official music video for the song in the works and ready soon. To celebrate the release of the album the Family Cactus will play the following shows, preceding a national tour: 28th of May - The Kings Arms - Auckland, 3

Kiwi hip-hop artist David Dallas has announced that he will be making his new album The Rose Tint available for free from www.daviddallas.net on May 11th. The Rose Tint features the singles “Til Tomorrow”, “Sideline” featuring Che Fu and the current radio single “Caught In A Daze” featuring American MC Freddie Gibbs. David, now based in New York, recently inked a deal with U.S hip-hop tastemaker label Duck Down Music. Since relocating to the U.S last year he has been impressing stateside audiences and industry folk alike. He recently won an MTV U.S online poll, with American audiences crowning him their MTV Iggy Artist Of The Week. His music video for the song “Big Time” has been added to MTV across the U.S - a huge break for any new artist. His talent has also been recognized on some of the worlds most influential hip-hop sites including Nah Right, 2dopeboyz, XX
L, The Source and 50 Cent’s own This Is 50 amongst others. His video for “Big Time” got a shout out from Kanye West on his personal blog. With a simultaneous release date across the globe for The Rose Tint, David Dallas is set to fly the New Zealand flag high as he continues to collaborate and compete with some of the biggest names in American hip-hop. The Rose Tint is the follow-up to David Dallas’ 2010 Tui award-winning/Taite Music Prize-nominated debut album Something Awesome and features production from Fire & Ice, Dan “Exile” Mawby, Nick “41” Maclaren and P Money.

On the live front

The Pirongia Mountain Music Men with Jan Mellsop are playing four slots at the Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival which runs from May 13 - 15; you can catch them every day at a range of different venues across the Bay area. Keith, the The Mountain Man himself, is the founder of this mission and stands tall for all ageing rockstars. He performs also as a solo artist... He is also one of Santa's cousins and gets dropped (no really) out of the sky sometimes or tied to the side of a mini stockcar to deliver gifts to children. He is a full time musician on the Waipa Delta cruising the mighty Waikato River; or for large bookings when he is under pressure his partner in crime is Jan and their Duo act is that of "Beauty and the Beast" . He is adamant he is the beauty and she is the beast: photographs will be shown to the public and we will take a vote. Keith is also a drummer of old or as he'd say an old drummer.

Around the World
Prince Says Life Would Be Better Without Covers...

If you want to record a cover, you don't need permission - you just need to secure the proper licenses and pay royalties to the writers. It's an affordable, compulsory license - meaning the author must grant permission - and its enactment dates back to the early part of the twentieth century..

Most of us simply take this concept for granted, though Congress enacted compulsory licenses to prevent unfair monopolies among publishers. That is, when Tin Pan Alley dominated and the media landscape was radically different than today.

That's a whole history lesson, but the same compulsory licenses don't exist on the recording side. Now, Prince says that life would be better if artists stopped recording one another's work ad nauseum and without express permission - and compulsory publishing laws were curbed. "I don't mind fans singing the songs, my problem is when the industry covers the music," Prince told George Lopez. "You see, covering the music means your version doesn't exist anymore. There's this thing called the compulsory license law which allows artists to take your music at will. That doesn't exist in any other art form - there's only one version of 'Law & Order,' but there are several versions of 'Kiss' and 'Purple Rain.'"

Check out the interview, a primer on compulsory publishing licenses, and the discussion at

All data is compiled by www.radioscope.co.nz To be eligible for the charts the release has to be by a NZ artist or Artist residing in NZ; and the master recording needs to be owned by a NZ Record Label or company that is an IMNZ member.
