Family handles the truth for V48Seconds
The judges have struck
their gavels, and V is excited to announce that the
Whiteside Family’s You Can’t Handle the Truth, a remake
of the famous scene from courtroom drama A Few Good Men, has
taken out the top spot in the V48Seconds 2011 competition.
V48Seconds calls for budding film-makers to choose a well-known scene from any film and reshoot it in an epic 48 seconds, with a savvy “V” twist. The ultimate warm-up for V48HOURS, the mini-comp welcomed anyone with access to a camera – whether hitting “record” for the first time or the next Peter Jackson – to have a go at Mildly Furious Filmmaking.
The winner was decided by the V48Seconds judging panel that included V48Hours founder Ant Timpson; Entertainment maven Kate Rodger; U Live presenter Connor Nestor; James Anderson and Nick Ward of Two Heads; and film critic Dominic Corry (a.k.a. Fabian Fanboy).
After a heated and energized judging process, You Can’t Handle the Truth came out on top, narrowly beating The Eh Team’s The King’s Speech in second place and 400 Stinkin Feet’s The Other Guys in third.
The panel of judges erupted in laughter when they first saw the winning film, with Dominic Corry announcing that “it’s got to be the number one pick for best performance”.
“We argued hard to decide on a winner,” said Ant Timpson, “finally concluding that this low-fi gem ticked all of the boxes: it had a clever integration of V, a standout performance, a fitting execution, a superb scene choice and was fully original. It stands by itself as its own 48 second short film, and is bloody funny”.
Judges found that the quality of films had again really stepped up from previous years, often with high production values, sophisticated editing and overall creativity resulting in films of an incredibly high standard. Of particular note this year was the impressive amount of CGI technology employed for some of the entries.
With so many great films, the judges couldn’t stop at a top 3, giving ‘honourable mentions’ to Only Son by FSP Crew, a remake of last year’s V48Hours winning film, and V to the Future by Piscola Films for its impressive special effects.
The Whitestead Family team will receive the top prize, which includes an Apple Macbook Pro, a 42” Panasonic Plasma TV, Final Cut Express, a year’s supply of V, free entry into V48HOURS and $1,000 for the competition.
Thousands of dollars worth of additional prizes will be given to the second and third placing teams, with special prizes being awarded for Most Creative Integration of V Product, Biggest Twist, Sexiest Shot of a V Can and Highest Energy Film. All winning film URL’s are attached.
V48HOURS, the world’s number one limited-time filmmaking contest, takes place on May 20-22, when teams throughout New Zealand will attempt to write, shoot and cut a short film within 48 hours.
