NZ’s Elite Women’s 7’s Players Prepare for Rome
The Aotearoa (NZ) Maori Women’s 7’s players attend a two day camp in Rotorua this weekend in preparation for the Roma Sevens which are held at the stunning Stadio Dei Marmi in Rome, on 3 & 4 June.
“This camp is our only real opportunity to come together as a team prior to the tournament” said Aotearoa Coach, Peter Joseph.
The Aotearoa Maori Team, although not the NZ national team, is considered to be one of the best women’s 7’s team in the world, having beaten all international teams that they have competed against in their eleven year history and, having amassed a record that is second to none.
“This is potentially one of the best teams that we have ever put together” said Joseph, “and we will certainly need to be if we want to successfully defend the Roma Seven’s championship title that we won last year” he said.
The tournament, which will see the best women’s sevens players in the world compete, will be televised throughout Europe and, will fundraise for the Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund, using the Aotearoa (NZ) Maori Team as the focus.
“Being the number one seeds and favourite to win the tournament bring additional pressures” said Joseph “but I have no doubt that these remarkable young athletes will do us all proud”. “A tournament of this stature will make it clear to our young players, the effort that they need to put in if they aspire to be Olympians in 2016”, he said.
The Aotearoa (NZ) Maori team depart for Rome on 30th May and, at this stage, have a funding shortfall of $25,000. Naming rights to the ‘Black’ jersey are available.
