Mid-winter launch party at Blue Oyster
The Blue Oyster is having a mid-winter launch party on Thursday (30 June) with the opening of its new reading room combined with the launch of a new exhibition space and the second issue of Dunedin art and culture magazine Crop.
Director Jamie Hanton says with the three events happening around the same time it seemed like a good idea to have a mid-winter celebration.
"The reading room is now up and running and proving popular with visitors. It's a good place to come and sit and look at art books and magazines on a cold Dunedin day.
"We've had fantastic support for this venture from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, ArtNews, D-Photo, and the Special Collections Library at Otago University."
As part of the reading room, a fourth exhibition space is being set up, says Hanton. This will be a small 'kunst und wunderkammer', or room of art and wonder.
"It's different from our other exhibition spaces in that because it's so small it will provide a different art experience for people in a more intimate, domestic-like environment. We are now taking proposals from artists for this space, which can take both hanging and object work, so any interested artists are welcome to come and view the cabinet, or send an email and we'll send images and dimensions," he says.
The third part of the launch party will be the launch of the second issue of Crop magazine. The bi-monthly arts and culture magazine contains writing and reviews of performance, visual art and music events around Dunedin.
The mid-winter launch party is on Thursday, 30 June, at 5.30pm.
