NZAFA Matariki Show

The Academy Galleries Present their Annual Winter Show

WELLINGTON – The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, a self-funding gallery dedicated to the visual arts, announces its yearly winter art show. The gallery’s Matariki Show will again bring together a wide range of pieces from a variety of artists.

This exhibition will feature a number of Academy artists, two guest artists Darcy Nicholas, Jenny Shearer (Former Academy President), and Australian artist Karen Casey’s installation Let’s Shake – Hands across the Tasman that has been developed from her community project Lets Shake.

Nicholas is a leading contemporary Maori painter sculptor writer, curator, events manager, and commentator on Maori issues. Shearer is a ceramic artist and print maker who playfully works her creative wit through the mediums of ink and clay whilst also giving time to the arts community in many ways. The three hundred moulds that will form part of the Let’s Shake – Hands across the Tasman installation represent the conversations and connections of six hundred strangers. These people came together to make art during Let’s Shake events in Australia and here in Wellington during the Matariki celebrations at Te Papa. The events invited people to shake hands while a plaster cast hardened between their hands. Once the moulds leave New Zealand the project is destined for Mexico and Turkey, so what you’ll see here at the Academy will become part of a global hand print.
