Two out of Two Gold Medals for Marlborough Single Vineyard
Family owned Auntsfield Estate was awarded two gold medals last week for the two Auntsfield wines submitted in the Spiegelau International Wine Competition. Both wines, the 2010 Auntsfield Estate Sauvignon Blanc and 2009 Auntsfield Estate Pinot Noir, were produced from Auntsfield’s single vineyard in the hills of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys wine-growing sub region.
The Spiegelau International Wine Competition is a new event and enjoyed a hugely successful first year with over 1000 wines entered for tasting in Blenheim last week. A feature of the competition was the tasting of wines in style-specific glasses. Guest international judge from Melbourne, wine writer Ralph Kyte-Powell said, “Using the Spiegelau glasses was an inspiration and added significant value for the judges as well as allowing the wines to show at their best.”
Auntsfield Viticulturist Ben Cowley was delighted with the awards, saying “it is very encouraging to be awarded two gold medals for the two wines we entered from our single vineyard. I am particularly proud of the fact that two such different wine varieties grown in one small area can make world class wine. We believe the old Loess clay soils of the hills in the Southern Valleys sub region produce wines with great minerality and structure, and these gold medals would support that belief”. Auntsfield Estate is owned by the Cowley family, with son Ben Cowley the General Manager and Viticulturist and his brother Luc, the Winemaker. The vineyard is focused on producing high quality Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, wines which are currently exported to over 20 countries around the world.
