Great turnout for NZ Snowboarder Banked Slalom

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (July 30, - 2011) – Over 60 strong snowboarders took on Treble Cone’s challenging freeride terrain yesterday battling it out for top placings in the legendary NZ Snowboarder Banked Slalom.

Scott James (Wanaka) claimed the men’s title with a speedy performance. Just over a second behind, Colin Boyd (USA) took out second place and Robett Hollis (Wanaka) finished third.

In the smaller but equally as strong women’s field Olympic snowboarder Rebecca Sinclair (Wanaka) produced one very strong performance to take first place, Claire Nash (Wanaka) placed second and Elizabeth Glazier (Wanaka) took third. In the masters division (35+) Nick Bourke (Wanaka) held his winners title and Rachel Newton (Wanaka) was the champion in the women’s field.

Male juniors also rose to the challenge with Winter Games competitor Joss McAlpine (Sydney) claiming first place, only milliseconds in front of Angus Gray (Christchurch).

The NZ Snowboarder Banked Slalom took place in Gun Barrel, a challenging course which saw all competitors demonstrate true style, confidence and nerve negotiating tight steep banked turns in unforgiving weather conditions.

The prize pool included cash, a Capita snowboard and day’s Heli boarding with Harris Mountain Heli-Ski as well as great prizes from Nixon, Union, Vonzipper, Huffer and Powerade.

This week Treble Cone will stage the FIS Series Ski Racing competition.
