Bach Musica Presents "A Journey To Salzburg And Vienna"

Media Release September 2011

Bach Musica Presents "A Journey To Salzburg And Vienna"

Sarah McCracken

Austria will come to New Zealand on Sunday 2 October, when a large number of leading musicians will perform two classical pieces as part of a Bach Musica NZ concert titled ‘A Journey to Salzburg and Vienna’.

At the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell, five vocal soloists will be featured in the New Zealand premiere of Biber’s Missa Bruxellensis: Jayne Tankersley (soprano), Sarah Court (alto), Michael Gray (tenor) and Moses Mackay and Anthony Schneider (basses). They will be joined by Bach Musica’s choir, singing in eight parts, and three orchestras (three trumpets and trombone, three oboes and two bassoons and strings).

The Biber mass will be preceded by a performance by two talented Kiwis of one of Mozart’s finest pieces, the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin & Viola played by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s acting principal violist Julia Joyce (nee McCarthy) and Bach Musica’s concertmaster Sarah McCracken.

The fifth concert in the 2011 Bach Musica NZ Subscription Series, ‘A Journey to Salzburg and Vienna’ promises to be an harmonious event, says conductor and Bach Musica musical director Rita Paczian.

“This majestic Biber piece has only recently been discovered in Europe, and Bach Musica NZ is proud to present it for the first time in the southern hemisphere. The Mozart performers, Julia and Sarah, are among the finest young musicians of our country, and the Sinfonia Concertante is one of Mozart’s most popular compositions. We look forward to taking our audience on a mellifluous Austrian journey.”
