Palmerston North Tackles World Record

A team from Palmerston North has broken the world record for the most rugby-tackles in a minute at the AirMax event held last week in The Square.

The team of 10 successfully made 36 tackles of a tackle bag in a minute, beating the previous record of 21 tackles. The record-breaking attempt was run in strict accordance with Guinness World Record™ rules under the watchful eyes of independent witnesses and notaries.

Vision Manawatu, Student City Palmerston North and Te Wãnanga o Aotearoa sponsored the AirMax event during the “Our People Our Place” festival as part of the city’s Rugby World Cup celebrations.
Denis Jenkins, chair of the Our People, Our Place steering committee said,

“‘From the outset we decided that Rugby World Cup was more than just rugby and we gave ourselves the target of creating a festival that encompassed all of our community – Our People. By providing a host of entertainment including inflatable games, cross cultural experiences, music, dance and much more we ensured that there was something for everyone. It also allowed hospitality businesses the opportunity to provide what they do best for the locals as well as for the many visitors that came into town – hopefully they left with a good feeling about Our Place

The AirMax event featured fun rugby-related inflatable games, music from local artists such as Dirtbox Charlie, Minus 52, DJ HUF, D Fresh, Us as Robots, The Uprising and The Nameless as well as performances from The Zero Gravity Cheerleading Team and The Dean Mckerras School of Dance.

Hundreds of people, including Palmerston North Mayor Jono Naylor, jumped into a giant inflatable giant crash mat from heights of up to 10 metres.

The Mayor also played a part in another record attempt for the most consecutive rugby passes. The number to beat was 262. Among the 300 participants were two members from the French rugby team as well as children aged 6 years old to grandparents in their 70s.

Vision Manawatu, Student City and Te Wãnanga o Aotearoa created the Air-Max event to help promote health and fitness to local schools, youth and clubs and to involve them in the excitement of the Rugby World Cup games being hosted by the city.
